I usually end up using Microsoft Movie Maker to compress the fire into WMV after I am done with Primier Pro.

Primier Pro is GREAT when a huge, HD file is ok, (or you are going to DVD) but I have had the same problem as you, and I have not had much luck getting a good quality portable file directly out of PP. I save the final project as an AVI, drag it into Windows Movie Maker, and then go through the wizard for best quality for playback on my computer.
