A video screencast is a recording of the output of a computer screen - also known as video screen capture. The actual term is quiet old and the earliest “screencasting” software is probaly Lotus ScreenCam. This was used as early as 1994.

The key to screencasting viability is the size of the files.

The earlier products produced extremely large files. In addition there were few editing facilities. Modern screencasting software creates much smaller files - examples are Flash, Quicktime and MP4. In addition the range of editing features and tools is ever exanding.
A single screenshot of a user’s screen is simply a picture of the screen. Tools like Turbodemo allow screencapture as well as screencasting - a screencast is essentially a movie created by sequentially playing back many images of a screen in rapid succession.

There’ll be more video formats supported by screencast apps. People don’t consider the file size that seriously, they want to have their screen recording video show at more places in high quality.
